Morning Routines.  I legit could read about/listen to ALL the morning routines people follow, there’s just something about them that fascinates me.  I shared My Morning Routine last year HERE and you all seemed pretty interested in it then so why not update you with what I’m currently doing now?

I know it might sound crazy to squeeze a Morning Routine in between the 10,000 things we do every morning, especially if you’re a parent, but I will tell you:  on the mornings I skip my routine to sleep in a bit, I am NOT RIGHT the rest of the day.  I would rather sacrifice a half-hour of sleep in order to start with a quiet, peaceful morning.  Call me crazy.

So before I go on and on about how much I love my morning routine, I’ll just share it, k?

Wake Up at 5AM…-ish

My goal is to always wake up at 5AM, but most mornings, it ends up being 5:30AM – which is still good in my book!  Now, my boys have to be up at 5:45 to catch their busses so I have a built-in guarantee that I cannot sleep past that or else they miss the bus.  Occasionally, Mike will get up with them and will let me sleep til 6:45, but like I said above, I never feel right when I do but there’s just some mornings I literally can’t.

There are many ways to get up early – set your alarm and put it across the room, refuse to hit snooze, pull the 5-Second Rule, etc.  Whatever way you do it, just do it.  Once you do, one rule: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE!

Get Out of the Bedroom

If you’re waking up early and just hanging in bed or in your room, chances are, you’re going back to sleep!  So my next step is to get out of the bedroom!  At this point, I let Delaney out, start the coffee and fill her food and water.  I’ll also chug a big ol’ glass of water at this point.

Quiet Time

This is my favorite part of my Morning Routine.  Once the coffee is done, I sit on the couch with my weighted blanket and read at least one chapter of my book while sipping on my coffee.  There is no better feeling than doing this in the quiet. Try it and thank me later!

Here are some books I’ve recently read:

Once I’m done reading, I write 5 things I’m grateful for.  I do mine in Evernote on my phone, but I do not look at email or anything at this point.  I’ve found that starting my day pointing out what I’m grateful for really sets the tone for the day.

Get It Moving

After that, it’s time to round up the troops.  I wake the boys up (one, two… five times) for school and get them moving.  I unload the dishwasher, throw in a load of laundry and make my bed.  I’ll have some breakfast, take my vitamins and do my 20 push-ups for the day (derived from this podcast).  Once the boys are off, I’ll then jump in the shower and get ready for the day while listening to a podcast – I listen to one every morning while I do my hair and makeup – its the perfect time where all you can do is listen and nobody is interrupting me.

Miscellaneous

A few things you don’t see on this list:

Working Out

Hunter and I have been doing Couch to 5K as part of our training to run a 5K together this spring, so we hit the gym when he gets home from school.  Honestly for me, I enjoy the midday workout bc it helps to wake me up in that midday slump period.

To-Do List

I started putting together my To-Do List the night before as it helps me to know what my day looks like before it even starts.  I’ve found this helpful in managing my time each day so much better!  I shared about how I manage my time HERE

Phone Time

I will not look at my phone most days until after the boys have left for school.  I try to be as present as possible in the mornings and not reacting to whatever email or text I’ve gotten overnight.

Choices

You have to choose to follow a Morning Routine.  You have to prioritize it.  For me, its worth every minute and puts me in control of my day.  I’m not starting behind the ball bc I choose to start my day in the healthiest way for me and it IS a choice.  It’s easy to say you don’t have time or you can’t wake up early and it’s not that you can’t, you choose not to.

So that’s it, that’s my Morning Routine!  I HIGHLY recommend making your own and starting your day on the right foot.  I cannot stress enough how chaotic mornings are when I haven’t done my routine and then I end up being very reactive and frazzled and nothing good ever comes out of me being like that.  I hope you find this helpful and would love to hear what your mornings look like!
