The search for the perfect v-neck tee…. I love me some v-neck tees and wear them often so after chatting with my Instagram followers, they gave me their all-time fave v-necks and I’m reviewing 5 of the most popular here! I decided to go with white v-neck tee from each brand bc they’re a classic and tried to see if there is one that ISN’T see-through…. keep reading to find out which were my faves and why!
NOTE: I am wearing a XS in each tee you see below. For reference, I am 5’3″, 130-ish lbs and a 34D.

Madewell Whisper Tee
Ok so I actually own a Madewell Whisper Tank and love it so I figured, let’s try the tees – plus they’re a cult fave! So these tees are made of slub cotton so they’re very lightweight, soft and have a pocket on the chest. Its a slimmer fit tee and has some give to it without being stretchy, if that makes sense. I would prefer a looser fit in this tee so I’d definitely go up a size. The white is very see through (even with a nude bra on), so if you were looking to grab this one, I’d recommend any color but white.
Abercrombie Drapey V-Neck Tee
I actually already own an Abercrombie Drapey V-Neck Tee and love it! The trick to these is sizing up. I am wearing a XS here, but I own a Medium in they gray bc I prefer it slouchy and pull it off my shoulder. This tee is soft and stretchy – its 95% viscose, 5% elastane – so it holds its shape. I like the curved hem and longer length on this one. Sadly, the white is still a little see-through so I’d choose any color but white in this one!
J.Crew Vintage Cotton V-Neck Tee
So this J.Crew Vintage Cotton V-Neck Tee wins for best classic shape! I like the wide v-neck on this one and its heathered texture and softness. I would stick with the XS for a slimmer fit, but size up if you want a little looseness. (This comes in extended sizes also!) Sadly again tho, its a little see-through! Gahhh!! It does come in 11 colors and some patterns so if you like this shape as much as I do, there are other color options for you!
American Eagle Soft & Sexy V-Neck Tee
The American Eagle Soft & Sexy V-Neck Tee was the loosest fit of them all – again wearing an XS here. Its soft and very drapey – 95% modal, 5% elastane. This one is very slightly see-through but shows the seam of my bra more than I’d prefer. I was just kinda ehhhh about this one tbh.
Universal Thread V-Neck T-Shirt
The Universal Thread V-Neck T-Shirt wins for least expensive of the bunch, only $8!! This one is 100% breathable cotton. It has a narrower v-neck and is the least see-through of the bunch. I would personally size up one in this for a looser fit. It comes in multiple colors and extended sizes as well. You can’t beat it for $8, really!
So the quest for a white v-neck t-shirt that isn’t see-through may continue, but there are some great options above if you’re looking for one in another shade! My top fave is the Abercrombie Drapey Tee, followed by the J.Crew Vintage Cotton Tee.
